Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Statement as of 1:45 PM EDT on June 13, 2013
The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
northern Alabama
northern Georgia
western North Carolina
northwest South Carolina
middle and eastern Tennessee
* effective this Thursday afternoon and evening from 145 PM until
800 PM EDT.
* Primary threats include...
several significant damaging wind gusts to 75 mph possible
several very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible
a few tornadoes possible
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 75
statute miles north and south of a line from 50 miles north
northwest of Muscle Shoals Alabama to 40 miles east northeast of
Charlotte North Carolina. For a complete depiction of the watch

Precautionary/preparedness actions...
Remember...a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.

Discussion...potential for severe thunderstorms will increase across
the watch area through the afternoon as a cold front supported by
strong upper trough spreads southward. Very unstable airmass now
situated ahead of the front and upper system will fuel intense
thunderstorm updrafts that will develop amidst strong unidirectional
shear. Resulting storms should attain supercell/splitting cell
character with large hail and high winds likely. With time...cell
mergers or some clustering may support the development of line
segments/lewps with increasing chance for more widespread wind
damage.
Aviation...a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 65
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 500. Mean storm
motion vector 32035.
