Public Information Statement for Gallatin, TN

Public Information Statement
Statement as of 8:10 AM CDT on June 26, 2013

...National lightning safety awareness week continues...

Today we take a look at outdoor lightning safety.

Being outdoors is the most dangerous place to be during a lightning
storm. When lightning is seen or thunder is heard...quickly move
indoors or into a hard topped vehicle and remain there until well
after the storm has passed. When thunder roars...go indoors!

Lightning safety starts with planning ahead. If thunderstorms are
predicted...postpone or cancel outdoor activities so you can avoid
a potentially dangerous situation. Second...monitor weather
conditions. Watch the sky for any signs of developing or
approaching storms and leave enough time to get to a safe place.
Third...if the sky looks threatening or you hear thunder,
immediately seek shelter inside a substantial structure. Remain
there for at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is
seen or the last rumble of thunder is heard. Some lightning
victims have actually made the mistake of returning outside before
the threat is over.

Tennessee's waterways are beautiful...but can be one of the most
dangerous places to be in a thunderstorm. Get out of the
water...off the beach and out of small boats and canoes. If caught
in a boat...Crouch down in the center of the boat away from metal
hardware. Avoid standing in puddles of water even if wearing
rubber boots. Put on your life jacket as thunderstorm winds create
large waves and turbulent water.
