...Powerful cold front will sweep across middle Tennessee this
evening...
A strong low pressure center developing over Texas will continue
strengthening as it tracks northeastward across west Tennessee
today and into the Ohio Valley tonight. Middle Tennessee will
experience mild temperatures again today as a strong south wind
pumps warm, moist air into the mid state.
A cold front will sweep through middle Tennessee this evening,
bringing widespread showers to the region, and also some
thunderstorms. Some of the storms may become quite strong as winds
aloft are brought down to the surface and result in gusty straight
line winds.
Meanwhile, surface winds will increase as the low center edges
closer to middle Tennessee. By late afternoon, south winds of 20
to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph will be common in areas generally
west of Interstate 65, and winds of this magnitude will spread
across the rest of the mid state during the evening and overnight
as the cold front pushes across the area.
You can expect temperatures to plummet behind the cold front, with
most middle Tennessee locations bottoming out at or below freezing
by daybreak Wednesday. Although the deeper moisture will pull out
quickly once the cold front is past, light snow is still possible
later tonight, with flurries continuing Wednesday morning in areas
to the north and east of Nashville. No accumulation is expected.
Brisk winds will continue on Wednesday as a powerful Canadian high
dives southward into the upper Midwest, with daytime temperatures
remaining in the 30's across the mid state. Wind chills on
Wednesday will remain in the teens and 20's, considerably colder
than the mild weather middle tennesseans have enjoyed the last
several days.
