Special statement for Gallatin, TN

Special Statement
Statement as of 10:12 AM CDT on May 13, 2012

...Significant rainfall will continue today in middle Tennessee...

Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue across
most of middle Tennessee today...with locally heavy rainfall. The
rain will be the result of a surface low pressure system moving
slowly eastward across the mid state during the day.

As of 1000 am CDT today...the band of heaviest rainfall extended
from near Waynesboro and Lawrenceburg...northeastward to
Franklin...Nashville...Mount Juliet...Gallatin and Portland. Many
areas in that band have received between one and a half and two
and a half inches of rain...with some isolated amounts between
three and three and a half inches. This band of heaviest rainfall
is expected to shift eastward to the Cumberland Plateau late today
and this evening...as rain tapers off over western parts of the mid
state.

Some minor street flooding and isolated flash flooding may occur
in the heaviest downpours...especially in low lying and poorly
drained locations. Urban areas...such as Nashville...will be
especially prone to street flooding when heavy rains fall. Small
creeks and streams will also be especially vulnerable to sudden
rises in water levels today.

...Significant rainfall will continue through the afternoon hours
today...

Showers and scattered thunderstorms are expected to continue across
most of middle Tennessee through at least the afternoon hours
today...with rain continuing to be heavy at times. This continued
rainfall will be the result of a surface low pressure system moving
into southern portions of middle Tennessee this morning and then
moving into eastern portions of the mid state...including the
Cumberland Plateau region...by this afternoon.

As of 3 am CDT today...some locations along the Interstate 65
corridor...including in and around the Nashville Metro area...have
already experienced around one inch of rainfall since showers and
thunderstorms began yesterday afternoon. Other locations across
the mid state on average have experienced between a quarter and a
half of an inch.

Rainfall is expected to taper off across most areas by late
tonight. Total rainfall amounts of between one inch from the
Tennessee River valley across western middle Tennessee to in
excess of two inches...with localized 3 inch amounts...across
the Cumberland Plateau region...will be possible.

Minor street flooding and isolated flash flooding may occur in
the heaviest downpours...especially in low lying and poorly drained
locations. River flooding is not expected to occur due to our
recent dry weather pattern.
